Understand how Pi Tape® products work and which type is right for your application.
A Pi Tape® is a precision measuring tape designed to measure the diameter or circumference of round objects accurately. Unlike standard tapes or calipers, Pi Tape® converts circumference directly into diameter using the mathematical constant π (pi), eliminating calculations and reducing measurement error.
Outside Diameter (D) and Inside Diameter (ID) tapes read the diameter directly
Outside Circumference (OC) tapes measure around the outside of a part
Inside Circumference (IC) tapes are designed for internal diameters such as bores or pipes
Each tape is specifically calibrated for its intended measurement type and should not be interchanged.
Pi Tape® instruments are used across aerospace, defense, manufacturing, oil & gas, automotive, power generation, and research laboratories. They are trusted wherever precise diameter measurement is critical, including by organizations such as NASA.
Learn how Pi Tape® achieves industry-leading precision and how to maintain measurement confidence.
Pi Tape® products are manufactured to extremely tight tolerances and typically offer resolution down to 0.001 inches (or 0.01 mm) depending on the model. Each tape is calibrated at controlled conditions to ensure consistent, repeatable measurements.
Pi Tape® products do not require adjustment, but periodic calibration verification is recommended for quality systems such as ISO or AS standards. Pi Tape® offers calibration and recertification services with documentation upon request.

Read the main scale value first (the last full graduation before the vernier zero). Then find the vernier line that aligns exactly with a main scale line. Add this vernier value to the main scale reading to obtain the final measurement.
Yes. Pi Tape® is well suited for large diameters and confined spaces where calipers or micrometers cannot be used. For very large parts, light masking tape can be used to help hold the tape in proper alignment during measurement.
Proper care extends the life and accuracy of your precision instrument.
Pi Tape® products are manufactured from stainless steel or precision spring steel, depending on the model and application. Select models are available with Easy-to-Read finishes.
After use, wipe the tape clean and dry. Most steel tapes should receive a light rust-preventive oil before storage. Store the tape in its protective container in a low-moisture environment. (Do not oil White Easy-to-Read tapes.)
Kinking, bending, stepping on the tape, applying excessive tension, improper storage, or exposure to moisture can permanently affect accuracy. Mishandling may destroy the tape’s tolerance.
