Precision Linear Rule with Vernier Scale

Measure with confidence using our Precision Linear Rule with Vernier Scale. Follow step-by-step instructions in inches or millimeters, watch the tutorial video, and download PDF guides for quick reference. Perfect for high-accuracy applications requiring a resolution of 0.001″ (0.025 mm).
First Steps

Brief summary before diving in

01

Ensure the linear rule, vernier section, and object are clean.

02

Align the zero end of the linear rule with the part to be measured.

03

Use the vernier scale to read the final measurement accurately.

04

For long measurements, masking tape can help maintain alignment.

Vernier Scale divides each graduation on Gage Member into 25 parts or .001 of an inch

Make certain the linear rule, vernier section and object to be measured are clean.

Each line on the linear rule represents .025”, while each line on the vernier represents .001”.

Place the linear rule on a flat surface. Slide the linear rule alongside the part to be measured.

Line up the zero end of the linear rule (left end) with the end of the part to be measured. Make certain the left end of the rule and the left end of the part to be measured line up exactly.

Line up the vernier scale portion of the linear rule at the point where the part being measured ends. This will place the zero on the vernier scale exactly at the right end of the part to be measured.

Locate the Zero-edge of Vernier scale and note the highest value achieved on linear rule above it
(the highest value to the left of Vernier scale). In this example, the value is 31.875”.

Next, determine which vernier line is aligned exactly with a marked division line on the linear rule. In this example, the value is 8 (.008”).

Finally, to obtain the linear reading of the object, simply add the two values together:
31.875” + .008” = 31.883”

As a suggestion for checking very large measurements – pieces of masking tape can be used to hold the rule
and vernier section in the proper parallel position.

Vernier Scale divides each graduation on Gage Member into 10 parts or .1mm

Make certain the linear rule, vernier section and object to be measured are clean.

Each line on the linear rule represents 1mm, while each line on the vernier represents .1mm.

Place the linear rule on a flat surface. Slide the linear rule alongside the part to be measured.
Line up the zero end of the linear rule (left end) with the end of the part to be measured. Make certain the left
end of the rule and the left end of the part to be measured line up exactly.

Line up the vernier scale portion of the linear rule at the point where the part being measured ends. This will
place the zero on the vernier scale exactly at the right end of the part to be measured.

Locate the Zero-edge of Vernier scale and note the highest value achieved on linear rule above it
(the highest value to the left of Vernier scale). In this example, the value is 1073mm.

Next, determine which vernier line is aligned exactly with a marked division line on the linear rule.
In this example, the value is 3 (.3mm).

Finally, to obtain the linear reading of the object, simply add the two values together:
1073mm + .3mm = 1073.3mm

As a suggestion for checking very large measurements – pieces of masking tape can be used to hold the rule
and vernier section in the proper parallel position.
